It's a photograph of a well-worn rock surface. The shot was taken in Canyonlands National Park just off the White Rim Trail in October 2005. It appears that the sandstone wore down to expose a layer of iron, and now the iron layer has mostly worn away, leaving only very orthographic-looking patterns.
